If your lawn in Midland or the surrounding Great Lakes Bay Region is looking a little tired this summer, you’re not alone.

Periods of summer heat, inconsistent rainfall, and humidity can all take a toll on local lawns. You may notice grass looking dull or brown, thinning areas, or spots that aren’t bouncing back as quickly as you’d like.

A Few Things Your Lawn Needs Right Now

Keep mowing high. Taller grass helps shade the soil, conserve moisture, and protect roots from summer heat. Avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.

Water when your lawn needs it. When rainfall isn’t providing enough moisture, water deeply rather than frequently giving the lawn a little at a time. Early-morning watering is ideal because it reduces evaporation and allows the grass to dry during the day.

Watch for signs of disease. Not every brown or thinning area is caused by a lack of water. Warm, humid summer conditions can also create an environment where lawn diseases thrive. Give stressed areas a chance to recover. Avoid unnecessary traffic on severely stressed turf, keep mower blades sharp, and continue monitoring areas that aren’t improving after rain or cooler weather.

Looking Ahead to Fall

The good news is that cooler temperatures and more favorable growing conditions can give stressed lawns an opportunity to recover. Fall is also one of the best times of year for Michigan turf to rebuild roots and regain strength after summer.

If your lawn isn’t bouncing back, Reder Landscaping can help identify what’s causing the problem and determine what your lawn needs to finish the season strong.
