Every summer, we get calls from homeowners wondering why parts of their lawn suddenly turned brown, thinned out, or started pulling up easily from the soil. Many times, the culprit is grubs.

The challenge with grub damage is that by the time you see the symptoms, the damage has already been done. That’s why preventative treatments are often the most effective approach.

Right now, conditions across the Great Lakes Bay Region are lining up with the timing we typically recommend for preventative grub control. Soil temperatures have warmed into the range where beetles begin laying eggs, and we’re entering the window when preventative products can provide the greatest benefit. That doesn’t mean every lawn needs grub control every year. However, if your lawn has experienced grub damage in the past, if you’ve had issues with skunks or raccoons digging for grubs, or if you’re simply looking to protect a lawn you’ve invested time and money into, this is the time to consider treatment.

One of the most common misconceptions we hear is that grub control should be applied after damage appears. In reality, preventative products are designed to work before young grubs begin feeding on grass roots later in the season.

For most Mid-Michigan lawns, the ideal application window is now through early July. Soil temperatures across the region have warmed into the mid-60s, which is an important milestone in the grub life cycle. As soils continue to warm, adult beetles begin laying eggs in turfgrass. Those eggs typically hatch a few weeks later, and the young grubs immediately begin feeding on grass roots. Preventative grub control products are designed to be in place before that feeding begins, which is why timing matters. Applying during this window allows the product to move into the soil and provide protection when newly hatched grubs are ready to feed.

As with many aspects of lawn care, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Some properties have a history of grub activity while others may never experience significant issues. The best approach depends on your lawn, its history, and your goals for the season.
